Common FAQs

Below you can find the answers to the most common queries we get, so read through these questions to see if the information you're looking for is here.

Lost and damaged tickets

If you have lost or damaged an Irish lottery ticket and you think it could be a winner, there's some bad news: you may not be able to claim the prize without it. The Irish Lottery advises that tickets are 'bearer instruments', meaning you must be in possession of a winning ticket to be able to claim a prize. If you have lost a winning ticket or damaged one to the point where the barcode cannot be scanned, you should contact the Irish National Lottery as asoon as possible for further advice. Online players should call 1890 244 344 or (01) 889 1000 and in-store players should call (01) 836 4444.

Claiming Prizes

If you've won a prize playing the Irish Lottery, then congratulations! How you claim your prize depends on whether you played online or in-store and on how much you won.

Online prizes up to €99 will be paid into your online lottery account automatically, while you'll receive a cheque for prizes worth between €100 and €500. If you're lucky enough to win an even bigger prize, you'll be contacted by a representative to arrange the payout. Claiming a jackpot will require you to travel to the Irish Lottery's headquarters in Dublin.

In-store prizes worth up to €2,500 can be claimed from lottery retailers, and for prizes up to €15,000 you'll need to go to the nearest lottery payment centre. Any prizes worth more than this must be claimed from the lottery's headquarters in Dublin.

Identifying a lottery scam

There are many lottery scams in circulation so it pays to be vigilant when dealing with any message regarding playing the lottery or winning prizes.

If you ever receive a notification that you've won a prize in a lottery you never even played, it is a scam and should be discarded immediately. Similarly, if you're ever asked to pay a fee to receive a lottery payout, it is also a scam - you never have to pay to receive your winnings. You can find lots more information about the subject on our Lottery Scams page.

Betting on the Irish lottery

Instead of buying a ticket for an Irish lottery game you can bet on the outcome of the draw. When you do that you play much the same way as if you buy a ticket - you pick numbers like normal and you can win all the same prizes, even those multi-million euro jackpots.

The biggest benefit of lottery betting is that you can participate in games you wouldn't usually be able to. So, as mentioned, if you're not in Ireland you can still choose your numbers for Irish lottery games, as well as many other lotteries from around the world, including UK Lotto and US Powerball.

You can bet on lotteries like these and more through IrishLottery.com, whether you're located in Ireland or elsewhere. Head to the Tickets page to find out which games you can get involved with.
